Launch of the DREEM Hub Uganda Project by JEEP and Heifer International on 30th April 2025
On 30th April 2025, Joint Energy and Environment Projects (JEEP), in Partnership with Heifer International Uganda, officially launched the Distributed Renewable Energy Ecosystems Model (DREEM) Hub Uganda Projects at its demonstration center in kampala. The initiative funded under the Mott foundation and implemented by Heifer International, marks a significant milestone in promoting the productive use of solar energy in agriculture
- The Launch event was graced by a distingushed lineup of guests, including:
- CEO of PEDN Mrs Mutumba Irene
- Representative of the Assistant Commissioner, Renewable Energy Department, Mr Julius Ocheng
- Dr.(PhD) Bishop Hannington Mutebi
- Country Director Heifer International Uganda, Mr Matovu William
- CEO Joint Energy and Enviroonmental Projects Mrs Ruth Kiwanuka
- Dr.(PhD) Nicholas Mukisa
- Agricultural Officer, Mpigi District, Mr. Valentine Ssekivu
- These dignitaries along with invited guests, were given guided tours of the newly installed projects facilities which included:
- Three solar dryers for post-harvest handling and preservation
- Solar irrigation systems enhancing water access for farming
- A cold storage unit aimed at reducing post-harvest losses
The DREEM Hub aims to empower smallholder farmers and equip university students through practical training in renewable energy applications in agriculture
- It Seeks:
- To train over 500 farmers in solar technology use
- To support hands-on internship for atleast 40 university students
- To document and share best practices for scaling solar powered agriculture solutions
Speaking at the launch, Mrs. Ruth Kiwanuka, CEO JEEP, emphasized the importance of integrating clean energy in agriculture to build climate resilience and improve productivity. "This center will serve not just as a demonstration unit but also as a catalyst for scaling sustainable, solar driven agriculture and energy access and offers a replicable model to advance rural development, food security, and environmental conservation
The launch marks the beginning of an impactful journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Uganda's farming communities
