Environmental Conservation 7 Year Project

In 1999, JEEP signed a seven year contract with PLAN International to implement the Environmental Conservation Project (ECP) in the Luwero District (different parishes each year) of Central Uganda. JEEP has implemented a five step program:
- Create awareness of environment and climate through seminars.
- Host Training of Trainers (TOT) camps to teach stove construction, advanced agriculture, community extension, and other topics.
- Demonstration plots are established in the local parishes by EEP staff, TOTs and local farmers.
- Seedlings are distributed by JEEP to encourage and start tree growing.
- Perform follow-up visits to track progress and encourage the TOTs to continue training. These visits can also include refresher courses to add and/or reinstate knowledge from the initial workshops.
The program has developed an good response each year. It has, however, been restricted to only the Luwero district due to decreases in funding.
Activities from 1999
1999-2000 was the first year JEEP started the ECP to raise awareness and instill knowledge and skills in natural resource management and environmentat conservation for sustainable development of the community, particularly foster families. The project was hosted in three districts: Kampala, Luwero, and Tororo. The performance review is available in the table below.
326 TOTs were trained. 20 PLAN staff benefited which enhanced its smooth implementation in the program units.15 follow-up visits and 13 refresher courses were conducted, one radio program was aired, and five cross-visits were organized for 146 TOTs.
Activities from 2004
The results of the 2004 ECP in Luwero are as listed below.
3 Awareness Seminars which hosted 28 school head teachers, and 73 local leaders. 4 Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops. 113 men and women were trained. 6 Follow-up Visits in which 167 people were interviewed to performance statistics. 4 Refresher Courses with 87 attendees. 5 School Awareness Seminars which hosted 2594 students and 54 teachers. 3 previously developed Community Environment Model Homes were supported. 2 exchange visits were organized for 28 TOTs to view progress in other regions.
There was a good response from the 90 TOTs that attended the evaluation meetings. Suggestions included extending the training from 3 to 4 days, and adding grafting, husbandry and briquette making to the training topics.
