Progress

Objective

To expand JEEP's impact by equipping staff, members and trainers with enhanced skills to implement sustainable environmental practices and green business models. The SDCA project focuses on addressing climate challenges, poverty, and energy access through innovative and inclusive training programs.

Project Description

The skills Development for Climate Action (SDCA) initiative aims to empower communities in Uganda by providing practical knowledge and skills in environmental conservation and renewable energy technologies. The project focuses on broadening JEEP's reach by introducing new training units, refining existing workshop facilities, and integrating new participant categories such as young entrepreneurs, vocational students, and community-based organization

The intervention addresses Uganda's heavy reliance on biomass energy, which accounts for nearly 99.5% of household energy consumption, contributing to environmental degradation and climate challenges. By implementing innovative solutions and training models, SDCA is paving the way for sustainable energy practices and climate resilience.

Training Units

  1. Clean Cooking Technologies
    • Focus on mud stoves, biogas systems, and energy-saving ovens.
    • Practical sessions on constructing and maintaining clean cooking technologies.
  2. Solar Energy Technologies
    • Training on solar generators, dryers, and LED light assembly.
    • Installation techniques and basic solar energy concepts.
  3. Briquette Production
    • Carbonizing, crushing, and molding briquettes from waste materials.
    • Techniques for mass production and marketing.
  4. Waste Management
    • Sorting and recycling biodegradable and non-biodegredable waste.
    • Production of biogas and use of organic waste as fertilizers.
  5. Tree Nursery and Gardening
    • Seed collection, nursery establishment, and backyard gardening techniques.
    • Training in herbal gardens and keyhole gardens.

Key Achievements

  • Renovation of training units at JEEP Folkcenter, equipped with essential tools and materials.
  • Training of trainers (ToTs) in various technologies, reaching 70 primary beneficiaries including JEEP staff, local community members, and university students.
  • Participants from the training sessions committed to disseminating skills to over 4,500 secondary beneficiaries in their communities.
  • Hands-on training in energy-efficiency technologies and climate-smart agriculture.

Lessons Learned

  1. Challenges
    • Limited training materials and time constraints during sessions.
    • Difficulty in selecting focus areas for participants intrested in multiple units.
  2. Insights
    • Engaging volunteers and ToTs in the renovation and training processes has been instrumental in project success.
    • Community-driven approaches and feedback mechanism ensure greater adoption and sustainability.

Sustainability Goals

The SDCA project contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs):

  • SDG 1: No Poverty - through income-generating green enterprises.
  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy - by promoting energy-efficient solutions.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action - through advocacy and practical training in climate resilience.
  • SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals - by fostering collaborations with stakeholders

Upcoming Activities

  • Expansion of training sessions to cover more districts in Uganda.
  • Collaboration with local government and NGO for resource mobilization and awareness campaigns.
  • Development of business models for all training units to insure long-term viability.
