Solar Technologies

In March 2007, Nordic Folkecenter and JEEP cooperated in their first solar project. Multiple different solar systems were installed. These include a solar system at JEEP office, solar lighting in three primary schools, a solar refrigerator in a health center and three solar phone charging systems in Arua, Tororo and Luwero districts of Uganda funded by project Fund/CISU. These systems were for JEEP to learn and collect experience as well as for the communities and health center to learn. Since then, Nordic Folkecenter and JEEP have never look backwards.

Nowadays, JEEP folkecenter is a teaching place and a solar energy demonstration center. At JEEP, Photovoltaic systems provide enough energy for computers, refrigerators, phone charging, office lights and security lights at night, a solar water Heater for JEEP’s Guest house, a Solar Fruit dryer and Solar products [Solar lamps].

We set up everything from small 2-panel setups, up to more complex systems including energy storage units, multiple solar cells, and switches to alternate between solar power and the standard electricity grid.

JEEP has installed solar systems in districts, which include; Luwero, Tororo, Arua, Mukono, Amuria, Lira, Kalangala, Bufumbo, Kapchorwa, Kasese, Mpigi, Bududa, Ibanda, Kasese, Kyankwanzi, Busia, Luuka, Namayingo, Lwengo, Wakiso among others.

Currently the following solar systems have been installed;

  • Solar lighting systems in 63 schools
  • Solar lighting and phone changing systems in nine schools
  • Solar phone changing systems in four rural communities
  • Solar Central lighting systems in two rural communities
  • Solar refrigerators in 10 health centers

See the map below for solar system placements.
